Competencies are clusters of traits, skills, abilities, and behaviors that are important for successful performance. A competency model includes a group of competencies that drive success. Competency models are important as they provide a framework and understanding of what is necessary for successful performance. This model is the foundation of your People Strategy.
Competency Models Inform:
In order to effectively hire, manage, and develop your people, you first need to define the behaviors that are necessary for success. Competency Models are the foundation of a Comprehensive People Strategy. It is difficult to know how to get somewhere if you don't know where you are going. A Competency Model defines where your people need to be going, which informs what needs to happen (i.e. what's measured, assessed, and developed) in the various elements of your People Strategy.
Recruiting & Selecting. When you have a sense of what you need your people to do (Competency Model), you can start finding the people to do it. This is an area where objective tests are valuable as they help you uncover traits and characteristics in a systematic way. Assessment also helps ensure that you are measuring the keys to success in a given position in a valid and reliable (legally defensible) way.
Onboarding. The most crucial time of an employee's tenure is the first 90 days. A purposeful and successful onboarding program is focused on acclimating the employee to the culture and aligning their values and goals with those of the organization. One of the most essential components of successful onboarding is understanding and recognizing the individual differences of each new employee.
Managing. A central focus of managers in health and human services is ensuring that staff and residents develop and maintain strong relationships - this is the core of what your organization provides. Providing managers and supervisors with the tools and skills to effectively manage these relationships is a hallmark element of the people strategy for best-in-class organizations.
Developing. A workforce that is invested in not only returns higher levels of organizational commitment, it also performs well. Investing in the professional growth and development of each individual staff member is a crucial element of an effective People Strategy.
